MELBOURNE'S ARUN ROBERT'S SOLO PROJECT "DIRT HAND" RELEASES FIRST SINGLE 'LION' TODAY FROM UPCOMING SECOND EP

Dirt Hand is a mix of traditional balladry and art-wank process experimentation. Australian solo project Dirt Hand (Arun Roberts) makes conceptual and process-based records that mostly end up sounding like alt-rock infused with neo-folk.

LION is the first single from the second upcoming EP called the "Thorn Variations" and is due for release in March of 2019. Arun likes Steve Reich so he produced a series of polyrhythmic canons built out of a single hand clap pattern. These variations became the building blocks for the entire project. For this recording Arun wanted to capture the players as they were still figuring out their parts, in a kind of magic garden of spontaneous adventure, so he deliberately told them nothing about the recording session.

"LION came about very quickly and has refused to leave me alone ever since. I wrote it one day shortly after my uncle had finally succumbed to the myriad cancers plaguing his body and life. He was a dear man and role model and I could only liken his passing to the defeat of a mighty lion by a gust of wind. This is its second recorded appearance. It is a song that stands up to constant redressing and reinvention, more than any other song I’ve written. I quite like that about it. It is like my own private jazz standard. For this recording I provided each player with a unique rhythm and asked them to base their part on that rhythm. The result was a kind of euphoric rhythm soup."

NUN // The Dome

This album was recorded on the Wathaurung land now known as Fairhaven, Victoria in April, 2016 and was mixed on the Wurundjeri land now known as Thornbury, Victoria from April to October, 2016. We want to acknowledge that the Wathaurung and Wurundjeri people are the traditional and continuing owners of these lands and we pay our respects to their elders, both past and present.

BITUMEN // Discipline Reaction

VINYL LP AVAILABLE FROM VACANT VALLEY:
vacantvalley.bandcamp.com/album/discipline-reaction

Discipline Reaction is the much anticipated debut LP from Melbourne based post-punk industrial unit Bitumen. This free-standing document was recorded at Magnet Studios in Coburg, and produced by the band with the help of Alexander Anglias (The Faculty, Ill Globo) – the phantom fifth member, and realised with the guidance of Peter Bramley, (Vacant Valley executive) who created the idiosyncratic cover art.

Experiencing their mesmeric live performances is to engage with a tense yet assured force. This year, the band have supported the likes of iconic UK post-punk group The Chameleons, and the needs-no-introduction Lydia Lunch, both in Melbourne and in Hobart as part of Dark Mofo festival.

Discipline Reaction – an apt title reflecting the bands sincere sense of drive and earnest audacity. This monolithic record faithfully portrays their electric dynamism and sheer conviction.

[LISTEN] NUN // Turning Out

Turning Out is the second single from NUN's forthcoming album, The Dome. Turning Out swings between NUN's ‘synth punk’ moniker to ‘sweetly gobbed’ choruses.

The band's development echoes the first wave of post-punk and Industrial music, from the malevolent broken electronics of Throbbing Gristle to the sensual trance of Chris and Cosey, or Human Leagues journey from the turgid grind of Being Boiled to the giddy synth-pop of DARE.

Vocalist Jenny Branagan cites the song as offering "disturbance and reward… we wanted the chorus to feel like a release from the frantic tension of the verse". "Musically it sounds triumphant but lyrically it’s a negative outline of those formative experiences that leave you altered and filled with rage".

ROADHOUSES / Self-titled

Three piece lo-fi trio, Roadhouses from Sydney, Australia released their self-titled album this year and I'm surprised it slipped right by me. The dreamy and hazy "codeine tempo anti-romance songs" as described by the band, holds a candle to lo-fi whimsical acts like Mazzy Star, Elysian Fields and Cigarettes after sex. Roadhouses doesn't lean on the genre like a crutch but rather reawakens that sultry groove in their own image. Yvonne Moxham's vocals are both sensual and soothing and transport you to a seedy motel room and find you there with a glass of gin in hand.

Roadhouses commissioned their cover artwork from the incredibly talented Nedda Afsari (aka MutedFawn) and it is the perfect visual homage to the band's sound. And you take a second look you'll spy that the femme fatale on the cover is in fact musician Foie Gras

KOLLAPS ANNOUNCES EUROPEAN TOUR 2018

KOLLAPS EUROPEAN TOUR ANNOUNCED

Since 2015’s debut EP Heartworm, Melbourne industrialists Kollaps have continued to refine their brand of harsh and viscerally raw post-industrial noise. Their hard hitting release SIBLING LOVERS, an LP that intensifies the conflict between the dichotomy of confusion and control cemented what claws at the core of Kollaps’ sound.

The bands' distinctive sound, jarring textures and crude tones are created using re-appropriated waste materials like scrap metal, raw plastics and steel beams. For the band, this isn’t an empty gesture but instead a way to quite literally use the detritus of postmodern society against itself. Kollaps continue to push the traditional boundaries of what it means to be a "band" whilst engaging the audience in an audible blood-letting and physical exorcism that invokes all the senses.

The bands' intensity and provocation as performers has built Kollaps a reputation for both ferocious live shows and confrontational performances. Their tyrannical stage presence and strident energy continues to steadily attract raucous crowds around Australia and Europe. Kollaps have proved themselves alongside some of the best local and intentional underground performers [Brighter Death Now, Trepaneringsritualen, Youth Code, Armour Group, Military Position, Operant].

This October sees Kollaps embark on a savage European tour of 13 countries and will also see them play WROCLAW Festival in Poland alongside heavyweights like Pharmakon, The Soft Moon, Blixa Bargeld & Teho Teardo and Monolith.

CHROME LEATHER // Personal Hell

Humidity is oppressive, it is stifling, it is enveloping and it is unbearable. Chrome Leather existing in the depths of the Brisbane underground, know this only all too well. Replace humidity with the disappointment and monotony of everyday living and you’re getting real close to understanding why this EP was created.

It is a means of reaching up and reaching out and still pushing through when you’ve had more than enough. With a heavy 80’s post-punk influence, this is music for the outsider.

Venetian Blinds // CHEATING

Photo © Nicholas Wilkins

Self-described as "Music for Vampires to drive to", Melbourne’s dark-wave outfit Venetian Blinds, provide a bass heavy, eerliy reberberous tone dripping with melancholic heartache. The bands captivating and entrancing music tends to centre around experiences of dialogical consciousness and lust.

The haunting and ephemeral vocals alongside achingly gloomy guitars and dark wave whimsical drone, Venetian Blind's Debut is certain to evoke the despair and existential within. The dichotomy of male and female vocals leak a sensual and evocative experience for the listener. And if the female vocalist sounds and looks familiar that's because she also handles the guitars & vox in rock three piece Bitch Diesel

This first offering from Venetian Blinds is both a dark wave delight and an ominous well cloaked piece of musical enigma.

This haunting melody, marinating in a bath of gloom, has been self produced and mixed by Venetian Blinds. elements have been recorded at Soundpark with the luminary ‘Idge’ behind the wheel.

NUN // Pick Up the Phone

Formed in late 2011, Nun started life as a recording project for members Jenny Branagan, Tom Hardisty (Woollen Kits), Steven Harris and Hugh Young (Constant Mongrel / Hamhock). The group formed over a shared love of bands such as Iron Curtain, Sixx, Coil, Throbbing Gristle, Snowy Red, John Carpenter, Goblin and Christian Death.

The band also draw aesthetic influence from 80’s BBC sci-fi dramas such as Threads, the children's occult classic Moondial, British 70's horror films such as Blood on Satan’s Claw, Carpenter’s classic They Live and Cronenberg's Videodrome, as well as the esoteric imagery of books such as Readers Digest: Strange Stories & Amazing Facts, where images of possession, stigmata, spirit photography and apparitions sit beside tales of the Loch Ness Monster and moving statues.

INSPIRED BY BLEAK DISCO, PARANOIA AND BUCKY FULLER.

Pick Up the Phone is the second single from NUN's second album, The Dome coming out November 2018 via Aarght Records.

Filmed, directed & edited by Sagan Productions (Bryce Maher and Jenny Branagan).

[LISTEN] DRUG CULT // DEBUT

Ritual Productions expands its roster with the signing of Drug Cult, a four-piece occultist doom collective whose debut self-titled rite beckons to see light of day.

Formed at the edge of Mt. Jerusalem in the hills of Mullumbimby, Australia, Drug Cult is the alchemic workings of guitarist Vin Steele (ex. Wolfmother, Megaritual, Sun Of Man), vocalist Aasha Tozer, drummer Dale Walker (Megaritual, Sun Of Man) and bassist Maggie Schreiber.

The catalyst of the cult is the bands history of art, punk rock, hardcore, doom, psych and metal influences which instinctively fused together; forming a channel of cohesive vibration. Their elemental craft has been brewing since April 2015 when the four close friends gathered on a Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse for a “Megaritual” ceremony, shaping the vision of a heavy celestial voyage through atmospheric sound connection.

The result is a 9-track vortex of majestic heaviness laced with an evocative psychedelic haze, whereby classic melodies meld with fuzz-drenched riffs cultivating an enticing potion of technicolour wickedness. Although a grooving heavyweight tone drives throughout the rite, a darkened presence is forever evident, hexing you into Drug Cult’s realm.

The band's debut offering was recorded live at Rocking Horse Studios, Byron Bay during December 2016, with George Carpenter at the recording and production helm and mastered by Brian Lucey of Magic Garden Mastering.
