[WATCH] Bizou // Superstition

Bizou is made up of former members of The Smashing Pumpkins, Light FM, Wax Idols and Tennis System.

Bizou brings their blend of goth shoe gaze and mix of edgy synth wave pop rock to life in their new track Superstition and the accompanying video which is reminiscent of 90s Brit pop like Elastica and blends contrasts between darkness and light. The broody sass of front woman Mina Prietto is intoxicating and backed by Nicole Fiorentino and her bass badassery only makes the sound and aesthetic that more appealing and magnetic to the listener.

Orville Peck // Dead of Night

Combining the lulling ambiance of shoegaze with the iconic melodies and vocal prowess of classic American country music, outlaw cowboy, Orville Peck croons about love and loss from the badlands of North America. The resulting sound is entirely his own. He takes the listener down desert highways, through a world where worn out gamblers, road-dogs, and lovesick hustlers drift in and out of his masked gaze.

Orville’s debut album, Pony, delivers a diverse collection of stories that sing of heartbreak, revenge and the unrelenting tug of the cowboy ethos. Warm lap steel guitars and echoing drums move through dreamy ballads and sometimes near frantic buzzsaw tunes - all the while paying homage to his country music roots.

Pony’s lead single “Dead of Night” is a torch song about two hustlers traveling through Nevada desert. Their whirlwind romance takes us on a dusty trail of memories - racing down canyon highways, hitchhiking through casino towns and ultimately, ending in tragedy. Orville recalls the adventures of his young love, as he watches the boys silently pass him on the strip, haunted by the happy memories of his past.

[PREMIERE] THE LOVE COFFIN / Cloudlands LP

After two promising 12” EPs, 'Veranda' (2015) and 'Buffalo Thunder' (2016), the Copenhagen-based rock quintet The Love Coffin is finally ready to unleash their debut album. The nine-song long-player is entitled 'Cloudlands' and will be released September 28th in a Danish/French joint venture between Bad Afro Records and Third Coming Records.
The Love Coffin’s songs are all about contrasts – be it in the music, which shifts effortlessly from finely spun melodic melancholy to searingly dissonant bursts of noise – their lyrical themes, which can best be described as pendulous journeys between ominous, tar-black depths of despair and bright shafts of cheek-blushing optimism – or in the schism between frontman Jonatan K. Magnussen’s wildly intimate, volcanic vocals and the cinematic expansiveness of the sonic imagery his bandmates conjure around him.

Sure, you might be able to glean bits and pieces of the patchwork of influences that has led to The Love Coffin’s sound – particularly the unforgiving, magmatic squall of the New York noise rock scene of the 80’s, the sepia-dusted, grimy wide-screen perspective from the post-punk that came out of Australia in the same era and last, but not least, a knack for burying lush pop hooks under a rough-hewn bedrock of ugly guitars, Trojan horse-style, not unlike the pioneers of British shoegaze did it.
This band, though, is first and foremost a beast of its own making. Beneath the bruises you will find both tenderness, raw-hearted honesty and a dizzying talent. These five guys are here, they’re now, and they’re going straight for the jugular. Embrace the darkness or fend it off; you probably won’t escape unscathed, but you will live to tell the tale of The Love Coffin.
‘Cloudlands’ is recorded at the Grapehouse studio in Copenhagen and mixed by Kristian Alexander Pedersen in Berlin. The album is mastered by Emil Thomsen and comes in a neat gatefold sleeve with daring photos by Jennette Laven.

Vanderocker // Driftwood

Vanderocker is the Los Angeles-based rock project led by Adrienne VanDeRocker. Originally from Austin, Texas, Adrienne grew up in a Dutch-American family of classical musicians. Vanderocker’s debut album Jupiter’s Kiss appeared in 2016. Adrienne is currently readying her much anticipated followup album Point Defiance for a fall 2018 release. Point Defiance finds a more cohesive form both musically and lyrically. Awash in fuzz tonesreverb and tremolo with almost-chanted vocals, it is sonically rooted in the best traditions of psych-rock.

Driftwood is the first single from Vanderocker's forthcoming desert psych-rock album, Point Defiance.

ROADHOUSES / Self-titled

Three piece lo-fi trio, Roadhouses from Sydney, Australia released their self-titled album this year and I'm surprised it slipped right by me. The dreamy and hazy "codeine tempo anti-romance songs" as described by the band, holds a candle to lo-fi whimsical acts like Mazzy Star, Elysian Fields and Cigarettes after sex. Roadhouses doesn't lean on the genre like a crutch but rather reawakens that sultry groove in their own image. Yvonne Moxham's vocals are both sensual and soothing and transport you to a seedy motel room and find you there with a glass of gin in hand.

Roadhouses commissioned their cover artwork from the incredibly talented Nedda Afsari (aka MutedFawn) and it is the perfect visual homage to the band's sound. And you take a second look you'll spy that the femme fatale on the cover is in fact musician Foie Gras
