[LISTEN] A Place Both Wonderful And Strange // The City Smells Like Cat Spit EP

A Place Both Wonderful And Strange is the Brooklyn-based "occult electronic" duo of Russ Marshalek and Laura Hajek. The David Lynch Foundation commissioned a performance by A Place Both Wonderful And Strange  that both toured and sold out venues like MassMOCA, PhilaMOCA and The Great Southern. They have opened for the likes of The Crystal Method, Father Murphy, True Body, Tamaryn, Azar Awan and Pictureplane.

The City Smells like Cat Piss surprisingly doesn't leave a bad smell or taste in your mouth after listening instead leaving you in enclosed in a chill ethereal electronic pod where aurally you are taken away to another plane or etheric realm of musical shadows and mysterious whispers across a hauntingly eerie landscape. With their dark and moody echoing sound there's little wonder they caught the ear of David Lynch himself.

A Place Both Wonderful And Strange have an upcoming show January 4th at Our WickedLady in Brooklyn, NY

trepaneringsritualen // a cold cell (Coil cover)

Formed in 1983, the legendary british project COIL were at the forefront of European experimentalism and electronic music for over twenty years. After the tragic accidental death of John Balance the remaining member Peter Christopherson decided that COIL would not continue. As Christopherson passed away in 2010, only memories and the recorded works of this great artistic collective remain.

This release presented by ant-zen and raubbau is a most remarkable act of reverence to Coil's haunting and magick sonic force.  'A cold cell' from the 'live three' album were issued on the 'scatology' release and is here re-interpreted by trepaneringsritualen (Sweden).

Puce Mary // The Drought

Building from a reputation of arresting live performances and critically acclaimed releases Puce Mary breaks new ground with The Drought, evolving from the tropes of industrial and power electronics to forge a complex story of adapting to new realities. Remnants of noise still exist, sustaining the penetrative viscerality offered on previous records, however The Drought demonstrates an intention to expand on the vocabulary of confrontational music and into a grander narrative defined by technical and emotional growth.

Bringing together introspective examination with literary frameworks by writers such as Charles Baudelaire and Jean Genet, Puce Mary’s compositions manifest an ongoing power struggle within the self towards preservation. The traumatised body serves as a dry landscape of which obscured memories and escape mechanisms fold reality into fiction, making sense of desire, loss and control. The Drought presents both danger and opportunity; through rebuilding a creative practice centred on first person narrative and a deliberate collage of field recordings and sound sources Puce Mary injects an acute urgency across the album seeking resilience.

“To Possess Is To Be In Control” makes use of lyrical repetition as an ambiguity of two selves, or a divided self, attempting to consume one another, while “Red Desert,” named after Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1964 film, portrays the individual subsumed by surrounding environmental forces. The seven-minute epic “The Size of Our Desires” acts as the emotional tipping point of the record; amongst the ominous drone and dense feedback flutters almost-beatific melodies, while the lyrics reveal a romantic call to be swept up in the midst of an increasingly uninhabitable world.

Rather than escape, The Drought dramatises a metamorphosis in which vulnerability is confronted through regeneration. Noise and aggression no longer act as an affront to react against but part of a ‘corporeal architecture’ where space, harmony and lyricism surface from the harsh tropes of industrial music. The Drought chronologises a transformation through a psychological famine, new ways of coping akin to plant survival in a desert – to live without drying out.

The album is mastered by Rashad Becker, featuring cover art by Torbjørn Rødland.

[Premiere] Some Ember // "Peace of Mind"

The latest Some Ember track "Peace of Mind" has been taken from “Submerged” which is a companion piece to November’s “Submerging the Sun” LP. These songs were written contemporaneously with the LP but seemed to break the spell of its grieving ambience. If the “Submerging the Sun” is a slow, scenic fall the the ocean floor, “Submerged” is the thrashing in the depths, the struggle for release, the gasp for air.

The songs here pulse with a sense of suffering survived and a renewed determination to hold onto the thread of existence. To be released on mirror silver cassettes, limited to 100 copies via Third Coming Records on January 18th 2019.

[WATCH] MAPPLETHORPE

Coming to Theaters March 1, 2019 Robert Mapplethorpe (Matt Smith) is arguably one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Mapplethorpe discovered himself both sexually and artistically in New York City throughout the 70’s and 80’s. The film explores Mapplethorpe’s life from moments before he and Patti Smith moved into the famed Chelsea hotel, home to a world of bohemian chic. Here he begins photographing its inhabitants and his new found circle of friends including artists and musicians, socialites, film stars, and members of the S&M underground Mapplethorpe’s work displayed eroticism in a way that had never been examined nor displayed before to the public. The film explores the intersection of his art and his sexuality along with his struggle for mainstream recognition. MAPPLETHORPE offers a nuanced portrait of an artist at the height of his craft and of the self-destructive impulses that threaten to undermine it all.
