Featured Tattoo Artist | Jim Sylvia

Name: Jim Sylvia
Age: 30 years old
Location: Los Angeles California.

What attracted you to tattooing?

I was attracted to Tattooing at a very young age, I grew up in a time when tattooed people were bikers and the rebellions of society. In the 1990's I started collecting every tattoo magazine and obsessing on the artists who were pushing the art of tattooing beyond flash and biker shit.

How did you get into the industry?

Getting into the industry wasn't easy. there wasn't many shops at the time and you really had to prove your worth for knowledge. Eventually someone gave me a chance and I will always be grateful.

How many years have you been tattooing?

I started tattooing in 2001, and continue to learn and constantly be inspired. My inspiration has changed over the years. At first i was interested in portfolio building and trying to tattoo all the classic designs. I would try my version of old school imagery. Lately I find inspiration in many other places. Mostly from traveling, museums, old reference books and antiques.

Who are your favourite tattoo artists?

I have many favorite tattoo artist, far to many to list. I'd be afraid of leaving someone out. I am constantly meeting new artist who are doing some amazing work. The list is always growing.

How would you describe your tattoo style?

It's hard to describe my tattoo style. I take elements of traditional and apply it to modern imagery. I never been able to step back and look at my tattoos and seen a style. I learn new techniques or tricks and always try to apply them to my pieces. In the past couple years I am trying to render stuff a bit more.

What advice do you have to people considering careers in tattooing?

The best advice I could share to someone considering a career in tattooing is what I was told when I was starting out. It's all about hard work. Just keep your head down and work as hard as you can. Hard work always pays off. You have to really love what you're doing and fully commit. I know it sounds cliche but it is working for me.

What are some of the best things you have experienced as a result of your career?

I have been very fortunate to experience many amazing things through tattooing. I literally owe everything I have to tattooing and my clients. I have been able to travel the world, meet some great people, make tons of new friends, and have unique experiences along the way.

Where do you currently tattoo?

I work at Unbreakable Tattoo in Studio City California. Alongside great artist like Sung Song, Julian Zeff, Jeff Meyer, Mark Dupp and many talented guest artists from all over.
