THIS IS MEANT TO HURT YOU | Art Basel Event

"THIS IS MEANT TO HURT YOU is a multimedia art publication created as a new and more ambitious outlet showcasing my personal aesthetic, as well as to showcase the talents of some of the many people that inspire and challenge me. In turn, I hope to challenge my audience to re-imagine subjects that have been traditionally maligned by polite society, such as tattoos and fetishism, by presenting them through a refined and romantic lens.
During this year long project, I have worked to capture the idea of being young, cold, and beautiful by creating a visual representation for the emotional distance that results from rejecting intimacy for oneself while still idealizing romance. The result thus far is a bold and provocative aesthetic of stark visual and psychological contrasts to illustrate the essential tension between elegance and squalor, romance and loneliness." - JAVIER BETANCOURT

Alicia Hannah Naomi | 2016 Collection Campaign

The 2016 collection is a response to struggle — to reconcile our self perception with our reflection; to bring to consciousness the unconscious; to bring to light that which lay within the shadow.

Inspired by Carl Jung’s philosophy of the shadow aspect, the collection explores the unconscious aspect of the personality that the conscious ego does not identify in itself, and imagines the assimilation of this unconscious darkness with our own reflections through the degradation and contortion of traditional forms such as chain links, hooks and eyes. Surface treatments range from the subtle through to the austere; façades weathered by unknown stretches of time. Oxidised detailing and black gems such as onyx, black diamonds and spinel help underscore the theme of the shadow aspect throughout the collection.

The campaign has been produced in collaboration with LA-based multidisciplinary artist Jesse Draxler, whose artworks deeply affected the mood and direction of the collection development; and Melbourne-based photographer Stephanie Cammarano.
