I've been creating art since I can remember! It's what I've always been good at. From middle school through out high school i was always drawing things out if someone were to get it tattooed on them. I wouldn't really say I was attracted to them at first. I feel like tattooing just kind of chose me! Like, this is what I was put on this earth to do.
How did you get into the industry?
I was getting tattooed a lot by Dana Helmuth who owned Solid State Tattoo back in Salisbury, MD. At the time he had just opened up a couple years before I started getting tattooed by him on my 18th birthday. I'd get tattooed and id bring in art work i was doing at home to show him i was interested in making tattooing my career.
I was denied of course hahaha a couple of times! But I was able to work on days in between my other job to run the counter and clean the shop. And from there, it started!
Was it hard to find an apprenticeship?
It definitely took some convincing. I was already getting tattooed on a regular basis, shared conversations, traveled. I quit my other job to dedicate myself 100% to do what needed to be done. Finally, I was offered to become an apprentice! It wouldn't say it was hard, but it was definitely stressful waiting on his answer!!!!
How many years have you been tattooing?
6 years in!
What inspires you?
Music, life, family, friends and a good beer!
Who are your favorite tattoo artists?
I LOVE Ben Corday, Sailor Jerry, John Rippey, Thomas Kenney, Ron Henry Wells, Jesse Strother, Steve Burlton, Nikki Balls and Joseph Ortega. All Winners!
How would you describe your tattoo style?
I love doing traditional work. Being able to produce and recreate something with bold lines and solid color, seeing it years down the road and it held up well... that's when I know I did something right.
What advice do you have to people considering careers in tattooing?
DON'T! hahaha there's already a hand full of us out there. Don't quit your day job! There's a lot of shit to go through before you even begin to make a living and a long road of respect to earn.
What are some of the best things you have experienced as a result of your career?
The fact that I can travel to make tattoos on new clients, friends and seeing different parts of the country! I've meet some cool mother fuckers that help me out a lot with my work and a place to stay while I'm guest spotting. Also, its a great feeling being able to provide for my family. I think that's the best thing.
Where do you currently tattoo?
I tattoo at Firebird Tattoo Studio in Katy, TX. but i am gonna be on the road after November and guest spotting frequently at Black Label Tattoo Co. in Frederick, MD.
