"This video is an observation of two cyber archetypes in the voyeuristic arena of social media: Those that are driven by a subconscious desire to hunt and those that subconsciously desire to be hunted. The “Sacred Limousine” is essentially my metaphor for how social media has given us the tools to simulate a charmed life, a special brand of feigned grandeur, without really showing what truly lies inside. Conversely, it’s also a vehicle that grants us the space to observe anonymously and act with impunity from behind our screens. Both of these roles are demonstrated and symbolized as the pedestalized faceless lady and the Peeping Tom behind the brush. The entire microcosm of this video takes place in a world within a world within a world - a series of facades and spaces beginning and ending with the mansion, another, like the limousine, visible display of luxury.

The recurring character(s)/performer(s) in VR SEX are my own artistic interpretation of this voyeuristic archetype featured in the video aka Noel Skum. The character set in the scene behind the drapes is my interior soliloquy, inviting my own vulnerability and susceptibility to be measured in the piece; both as part of this collective epidemic of internet voyeurism, but also a cautioner to be aware of my engagement with social media and it’s illusory simulacra. Because the tools for silently monitoring strangers are made readily available and sold to us, we all can be very easily become part of this voyeuristic and objectifying culture." -Andrew Clinco

SRSQ // The Martyr

Photo © Kristin Cofer

SRSQ  (pronounced  seer-skew)  is  the  solo  project  of  Kennedy  Ashlyn  (vocalist/keyboardist  of  Them  Are  Us  Too).  Creative voids aren’t filled, but rather holes left that push the edges of the present into new realms of consciousness. SRSQ’s pulse began after the  death  of  Kennedy’s  closest  friend  and  TAUT  collaborator  Cash  Askew, a casualty in  the  sudden and tragic Oakland  Ghost  Ship  Fire  of  2016.  Driven by loss, SRSQ became the vehicle for Kennedy’s transformative process, exploring nuance, nostalgia, reflection, and reconciliation, manifesting in the aural landscape of Unreality.

The Martyr is the first single from the upcoming debut album 'Unreality'

As a debut, Unreality is entrance into a new form of  storytelling, traversing the present while pulling from a deep swath of experience, immersion, and sound. Like the impulse it pulls from, each song evokes the complex duality of meditation—where simple intersects with infinite. Ambient  synthesizers  that  approach  harshness,  relentless  arpeggiations  act together with Kennedy’s  vocals as a lush weapon, weaving cloudlike fables over orchestration that’s familiar and foreign. Trance-like at times, yet always rooted in cadence and structure, the synesthesia of sound and feeling takes cues from the delicate miasma of Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, or Dead Can Dance, using their example as the ground floor for building a new temple of frequency. Kennedy proves an adept architect of rhythm, using sequenced electronics as a deep backbeat that allows the harrowing beauty of her vocals to lead the journey.

Produced  by  Matia  Simovich  of  Inhalt, Unreality  is  simultaneously  crisp  and  full,  each  tone  and  note  occupying  its  own  unique  sonic  world - grief butted against power, tracked to a heavy heartbeat.

SRSQ Unreality will be out October 26th on CD, LP, and digital formats via Dais records.

ADULT // THIS BEHAVIOR

Over the course of the last two decades, Detroit-based duo ADULT.(Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller) have released six albums and nineteen EPs and singles across some of our favorite labels: Mute, Ghostly International, Thrill Jockey, Clone Records, Third Man Records, and their own label, the revered Ersatz Audio.  November 1998 marked their first release: the five-song 12" “Dispassionate Furniture”. This September, twenty years later, Dais Records is proud to announce ADULT.’s seventh full length album: THIS BEHAVIOR.

The album began as 23 demos written and recorded in a remote cabin in the woods of Northern Michigan during the dead of winter. In total isolation, and with a reduced amount of gear (a modified version of their live setup) on the cabin’s kitchen table, the duo were completely immersed in an incessant inescapable studio of their own making – looping, repetitive analogue sequences grinding away day and night.  At the end of the intense demo session, a handful of peers were enlisted by the band for the difficult task of paring down the demos into the final album.

The result is 10 tracks of uncompromising dark electronics, showcasing ADULT.’s return to aggressive and energetic dancefloor mastery. Album opener “This Behavior” alongside the follow-up “Violent Shakes” (which ascends into synths wailing like warning sirens over Kuperus’s commanding vocals) set the stage for an on-edge listen, while the heartbreaking “Silent Exchange” unfolds as a beautiful sad synth dirge.  “Perversions of Humankind” breaks the mood – driving the listener into a slow and low groove before the frantic album midpoint of “Irregular Pleasure”. “Does The Body Know?” is the album’s post-punk anthem, with irresistible singalong “we’re out of order – we’re undefined!” The latter half of the album drives forward with “On The Edge (You Put Me…)” and “Lick Out The Content”, refusing rest and demanding movement and response. “Everything & Nothing” emerges slowly from sparkling synth textures, snowballing with nervous energy into an acid techno stomper before the album comes to a close on the icy landscape of “In All The Debris”, a goose-bump inducing slow electronic mantra that closes the curtain on a massive album.

[DAIS RE-ISSUE] Coil presents Black Light District - A Thousand Lights in a Darkened Room

Dais Records is proud to announce the official reissue of "Coil presents Black Light District - A Thousand Lights in a Darkened Room". Remastered by engineer Josh Bonati and supervised by Coil's Drew McDowall.

For those who shine darkly……

During the transitional period in which Coil’s primary leadership, Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson and John Balance, reorganized their creative direction by taking on new membership in the group through their inclusion of Drew McDowall, Coil took a drastic turn towards the metaphysical unknown. Employing the subtle handiwork of Coil’s “real life” members, as well as the cleverly guised aliases and spiritual collaborators, the band chose to filter their identity through a the nome de guerre, Black Light District, setting the precedent of Coil’s future exploration of otherworldy influence.

Recorded during the Winter of 1995/96, Black Light District reflects more on their formal avant-garde pursuits and academic interests rather than their industrial pedigree resume. Starting off with an obvious nod to John Cage with their introductory “Unprepared Piano”, the tone is prepared in exactly the same way… unpredictable. Conceptually abstract, Black Light District shows Coil’s old guard disregarding the pop rhythms found on previous albums, such as Love Secret Domain, and fully embracing their experimental electronic trajectory. Subtle patterns of looping melancholy and malaise are placed delicately underneath ghostly electronic timbre. Approaching their creative method as something from the beyond, another realm in which sounds blur and performers seemingly appear from the ether.

HIDE // "Wildfire"

[The first single off our debut album is “Wildfire”. We made this video with a power trio of women photographers/filmmakers who we have worked with in the past and were eager to do something more involved with. “Wildfire” is about the earth rejecting its inhabitants. The album overall is about autonomy, identity, and power dynamics.]
